Exploring Emotion Before and After School

This past week the before and after school children have started to explore learning about emotions. It is not always something that children want to talk about, so the goal was to try and find ways that they would enjoy learning about their emotions.

We started with a loose parts activity and asking the children; "How do you feel today?" They had to recreate how they felt. They also had different emotion cards if they needed some guidance on how to make that face. The children really enjoyed expressing how they felt that day.

As the week progressed I noticed the children really loving playing with the emotion cards, so to make it even more fun for them we made a game of headbands. The children had to use descriptive words to describe what the emotion could be with out saying the actual word. The younger children do not have as large as vocabulary, but it was awesome to see how they were able to come up with different ways to describe them.

As the weeks go on we are going to keep exploring more social emotional learning in fun and engaging ways.
