The after school group has been busy doing a few things the past couple of weeks.
The children have been interested in building lately, so why not throw Lego into the mix and let them make their own bridges from Lego to get across the river. The children got creative with their bridges and some children even made boats and submarines.
Keeping on a building track we made 3D shapes using pipe cleaners and straws. Some of the creations included a house, 3D triangle and 3D square. The children are practicing their fine motor skills (pinching, and picking up objects), counting (how many sides there are), colours and eye-hand coordination. The children worked quite hard on their creations and they turned out great.
We also did stacking the cubes to see how high we could stack them. The children practiced counting, colours, patience, grasping, and balance. It turned into a friendly competition for whose tower was taller. The tallest tower was 10 cubes high.
Something I enjoyed as a child was doing Human Bingo. The children each got a piece of paper with a chart on it with different squares they had to get filled in by their peers such as, someone who plays hockey, someone who likes broccoli and someone who has been horse back riding. The children had blast doing this and learning new things about each other. The children learned how to interact with each other by asking questions and adding comments. This was a great activity especially for our more shy children.
We hope to do a lot more in the coming weeks and can't wait for you to see it.
